#NeverTrump is no longer a thing.

Following his defeat in the Indiana GOP primary, Republican presidential candidate, and Texas senator, Ted Cruz has announced he is suspending his campaign for the Republican Party presidential nomination.

With 53% of the Indiana vote tally, Donald Trump is now the presumptive nominee for the Republican party. Cruz finished with 37% of Indiana primary voters, but despite a detente his campaign had announced it had reached with John Kasich, so that the Ohio governor would cease promotion in the Hoosier state thus preventing Trump from carrying Indiana, a winner-take-all state, Trump has reached a plurality, and has all but assured his first ballot nomination in Cleveland.

Trump has defeated Cruz by double-digit margins, prompting the senator to announce from his campaign headquarters in Indianapolis, IN: “With a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.”

This unexpected suspension by Senator Cruz, who vowed to stay in the election with the hopes of gaining the nomination though a contested convention, once again completely shakes the foundations of an already historically unpredictable primary season. No signs of suspension of the Kasich campaign have yet surfaced, but with a small support base and limited finances, the Governor represents little opposition to Donald Trump, who is now the de-facto Republican Party nominee.

Cruz, who was seen as the last principled conservative candidate by many pundits and voters, was believed to have a strong evangelical base in Indiana that would materialize into a close match up, but after the results came even the Senator confronted the reality of the situation stating,

“From the beginning I’ve said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I’m sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed. Together, we left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we’ve got. But the voters chose another path.”

Indiana, the state already famous for one race that often leads to destruction and tears, will now go down in history for being famous for two. Tonight Donald Trump sped past all opponents and crossed the proverbial yard of bricks leaving Ted Cruz in a far off second place finish, with a campaign permanently suspended in pit row.
