For those libertarians outside Canada; those peering in and looking with askance at Trudeau, many of whom are aware that Trudeau is causing damage but don’t seem to be aware of the extent of it. I will say that it’s not all bad.
He is aggressively pursuing free trade – the single greatest downward pressure on the cost of living our civilization has devised.
He has given the upper middle class, marginal tax cuts and he has attempted to legalize marijuana.
There are other issues, such as the poor living conditions of aboriginal communities, which I strongly suspect he really cares about but has no meaningful ideas on how to help (beyond failed Keynesian policies).
He does, however, come with major setbacks.
Economically he has run deficit budgets two years in a row (totaling nearly $60 billion – double the size of our military’s budget over two years). He’s expanding Canada’s Pension Plan (social security) – additional income deductions. He cut our tax-free savings accounts (investment accounts that were exempt from paying tax) in half.
His own personal fortune was inherited from his father, whose Orwellian reign over Canada ended fittingly in the year 1984.
His son took up the mantle and helped to pass the most invasive spy measures on Canadians in our history. The horrifying moment in 1984, when it’s revealed that Winston couldn’t escape the state surveillance, this is the current state of affairs in Canada.
Environmentally, his governance is a disaster.
Even worse, our new government spends $3.3 billion on fossil fuel corporate welfare and only $450 million on green energy – fossil fuel companies and their wealthy executives are exceedingly happy with Trudeau.
Unfortunately, his proposal is to institute a carbon tax ensures average Canadians pay more while fossil fuel company shareholders receive more. This is the highest unfolding of crony capitalism – a brutal distortion of the free markets, which enables the dominance of fossil fuel companies and the continued impoverishment of ordinary Canadians with an electricity bill.
He has canceled environmental tax credits and claimed he would use the additional revenue to invest in green tech. Essentially, individuals don’t have the right to decide how to be environmental, our sagacious Liberal government will decide how to be environmental.
Unfortunately, his government doesn’t have any experience in a successful green-tech investment portfolio.
He’s really saying that we ought to trust in the state rather than ourselves.
He has also canceled tax credits for enrolling children in the arts or sports, in favour of the state subsidizing programs themselves – he will he decide what programs best suit Canadian children rather than their parents.
Socially, it’s a massive transfer of responsibility from the individual to the state.
Lastly, the dreadful Saudi arms deal that I’ve written about in the past.
Trudeau claims to be a friend to the LGBTQ community, and he claims to be a feminist – this is an odd claim given his approval of supplying weapons to Saudi Arabia, who uses those weapons to arrest women for having been assaulted and to hunt down homosexuals in order to behead them.
His policy in the Orlando shooting would be to restrict gun ownership of the victims and sell them to the shooter and none of this is exaggeration or hyperbole in the slightest.
The most unfathomable conclusion from all of this is the Saudi war in Yemen.
They’re currently engaged in genocidal warfare against the Zaydi Muslims in Northern Yemen, using starvation as a weapon of war.
Trudeau approved the export permits, from a deal brokered by his predecessor, for $15 billion in military equipment that will be used in the war campaign.
Trudeau has officially made Canada complicit in genocide.
In short, Trudeau is crippling our future economy, destroying our environment, diminishing the individual while expanding the state, and making Canada complicit in genocide.
His legacy is death, debt, and necessitating an unparalleled trust in the state. This isn’t the liberal principles upon which his party was founded.
