Former Vice President, Joe Biden, gained 284 votes in the Electoral College according to the Associated Press and was declared the winner of the 2020 United States presidential election. His defeat of incumbent Donald Trump makes him the first candidate to beat a sitting president up for reelection since Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Final polls before election day showed Biden beating Trump in key swing states, with the President being in a deeper hole than his 2016 victory against Hillary Clinton. Despite Trump’s historic win against the polls in 2016, he was not able to repeat the magic.

Part of Trump’s victory in 2016 was due to his flipping of traditionally blue states like Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. This time around, he was not able to flip Wisconsin or Michigan, and surprisingly Arizona, which Trump won by 3% in 2016, was flipped by Biden. This led to a significant decrease for Trump from 2016.

The day after polls closed, Trump’s campaign manager claimed they would demand a recount in Wisconsin due to “irregularities in several […] counties” and that they intended to take legal action in states with close margins. A rumor was also spread by many, including conservative pundit Candace Owens, that Wisconsin had more votes than registered voters, but this was found to be false as the number being spread was from 2018.

Friday morning also provided another blow to the Trump campaign as Georgia and Pennsylvania, which the President had been steadily leading, flipped for Joe Biden. These flips gave the former Vice President a commanding lead in the Electoral College.

The most suspenseful moment of the election was the wait for Nevada’s mail-in ballots which stopped being counted Wednesday and was later explained to be announced Thursday morning. The final results have yet to be fully disseminated.
