On December 16th a rather interesting GoFundMe campaign began. The campaign is called “We The People Will Fund The Wall” and it’s exactly what you think it is. With the goal of $1 billion to contribute to the building of Trump’s border wall, this particular GoFundMe campaign is making waves.
As of the time this is written, the campaign has already reached an astonishing $1,263,978 in pledged donations to go towards the border wall. Within the first three days, the Daily Mail reported that they had already crossed the $900,000 mark. The idea is that this would be a private donation given to the government to cover a fifth of the proposed $5 billion cost that President Trump has demanded.
As you may recall there was recently a showdown between Trump and Nancy Pelosi over the funding for a border wall which almost led to a government shutdown, which Trump recently announced he was on.
The GoFundMe campaign was started by one Brian Kolfage, a 37-year-old veteran who lost his both of his legs and one of his arms during his service in Iraq and has been using the hashtag #GoFundTheWall to raise awareness. According to the GoFundMe page “If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge $80, we can build the wall.”
In my personal opinion, this is both a good and a bad thing. It raises many questions about the mindsets of the average American that is donating the funds directly out of their own pocket towards this campaign. Despite the general uselessness such a wall would actually have compared to say additional border staff or the like (if their intention is to truly increase border defense) they still are making large donations. The one upside to this, however, is that if it does work it will open the American public’s eyes to a notion that we libertarians have been espousing for years: fund these things yourself rather than using our tax dollars towards it.
