My view of the left was forged at a book study in my first year of university. The year was 2003 and the issue de jour was the Kyoto Protocol to fight climate change. I claimed we should pursue measures other than a carbon tax, and it gave some at the book study an anxiety attack. With anger and vengeance the leftists in the room swarmed on me with accusations of every kind of evil: Greed, sloth, and they claimed I was too prideful to look at evidence.
When the evening was over, we went to leave. I hopped on my bike and several of them got into their SUVs. I challenged them on the hypocrisy and they had a list of excuses that was the length of their arm. It’s not that I didn’t have a car – I did – I just thought biking is healthier and better for the environment.
Leftism is most properly defined as the belief that someone else ought to be virtuous, but the believer gets an exemption. Leftists wish for other people to deal with the consequences of their armchair politics. Others must pay the price.
Another friend had become a professor at a local university. There was a write-up in a newspaper about how his politics had shifted. He’s come to embrace the politics of privilege. He believes strongly in the university’s diversity initiatives, in hiring more women and people of colour.
I thought this was fantastic, I even offered to help find a qualified woman or person of colour to replace him in his position.
He didn’t react positively to my suggestion. It was other people that had to face the consequences, it was others that must face unemployment but not him. It was other people that had to pay. As long as he maintained his ivory tower position he would continue to do his armchair politicking.
We see this in economics, environmentalism, and now, it’s well-pronounced in racism. My social media is filling up with the acceptance of violence resulting from these riots. Not that it’s being encouraged from the left, but rather than they’re showing a form of support, and of tolerance.
Looting is virtuous as long as it happens in another’s neighbourhood, but never their own. Herein lies the extreme racism of the left: The looting is taking place in predominantly black neighbourhoods, and they’re tolerant of that. They would never tolerate violence in their own neighbourhoods.
But it goes beyond racism. This is a casual disregard for other people’s lives and livelihoods under the false disguise of love and tolerance. The disguise is the problematic part, because as evil and as violent as their views are of tolerating the pain of innocent people, the conscience of the left will prod them to tolerate even more.
They wish to appear virtuous and force others to pay for it. Heaven forbid they give up their own jobs, Heaven forbid the violence comes to their neighbourhoods. Let Hell reign over anything that doesn’t impact them. As long as they don’t suffer they’re happy to pretend to be virtuous.
This is evil beyond hope. This is hypocrisy. This is vicious racism. This is a desire for their voice to be heard while others suffer. It’s among the most calloused versions of self-righteousness one could encounter.
